If you are an avid sports enthusiast and watch things like Baseball, Football, Hockey, etc., you may notice that a lot of the times, there are advertisements on the walls to the stadium/field/rink/etc.
The same is about to happen for League of Legends. However, it is going to be a bit unique.
For tournament matches in League of Legends, viewers will now see advertising on the Summoner's Rift Arena Banners. However, actual participants in the game will not see the advertisements; instead, they will see the base Banner model. This is meant to not distract the players while in-game.
Advertisements in broadcast sports are something that has been around for... let us just say a long time. The fact that League of Legends is just now doing something like this is a bit surprising.
I also love the fact that only match spectators will see the advertisements. This will allow participants of each match to stay focused on the game, and not getting distracted by an advertisers logo on the banners.
In a statement from Riot Games over on Lol Esports, "Our aspiration is to create an environment that exudes the energy found in traditional sports, and we'll continue to work towards that goal. While these banners will be visible to those watching online, pros will continue to see the standard Summoner's Rift model while playing their official matches. This will ensure that a new visual model won't impact their ability to practice and compete on an identical Rift."
It is going to be interesting to see how changes like this affect eSports across the board. Maybe we will see in-game advertisements in Overwatch or Fortnite soon?
What are your thoughts on in-field advertisements for League of Legends?
