Hello fellow Shadowers (and potential Shadowers)! Today, I will be talking about the different "Versions" of the Shadow Client. These are the Stable, Beta, and Alpha versions.
Let us start with the naming convention. Many software companies, from games to enterprise class software usually has multiple versions of their software. This can be the usual Stable, Beta, and Alpha like what Shadow has, or software like Chrome has Beta, Developer, and Canary versions.
Each company will have their own naming convention, but most, if not all, will have multiple versions.
So, what does these names all mean? Let us take a look!
Well, for Shadow, the Stable client will be the most reliable of all three clients, hence the name Stable. This means that the features released in the Stable client have been thoroughly debugged and tested before release, making your Shadow experience less buggy. However, this also means that the Stable client will not see newer features until they have been tested enough.
The Beta client is the client where newer features are added before the Stable client. This is usually to allow for the general public to test newer features, and give feedback on any errors or issues they may encounter. The Beta client will be less reliable then the Stable client, but it will have newer features for you to try. This client is updated more often then the Stable client.
The Alpha client is much like the Beta client, however the features released in this version are newer, and less tested. If you are looking for stability or reliability, this is not the client you should be using. The Alpha client is recommended for those who want the newest of new features, while also providing feedback to Shadow on any issues they may encounter.
What should I use?
Well that is a good question! Do you want to use Shadow with as little issues as possible? Then I would say use the Stable client. This will allow you to enjoy Shadow with little to no crashes, errors, or other issues you may encounter on the other clients.
Do you want to try out new features, but still have some reliability? Then I would recommend you use the Beta client. This will give you newer features with your Shadow, while keeping some reliability. However, if you plan to use either the Beta or the Alpha client,s then I highly recommend you give Shadow feedback on your usage of the client. It will help the development of Shadow, which in turn will make your Shadow experience even better in the future!
And lastly, if you want to use the newest of features with little care to reliability, then Alpha is for you! Same for Alpha as I mentioned for the Beta client. If you use the Alpha client, make sure to provide feedback to Shadow of your experience with the client.
Anything else I should know?
Why yes their is! One of the frequent issues that many Shadowers experience is connectivity errors. These could be because of internet connection, driver issues, or anything else from your network to your Hardware, and the Shadow client.
But, one of the best things you can try is a different version of the client. If you are having issues on the Stable client, try downloading the Beta or Alpha clients to see if you can connect, and vice versa if you are on the Beta or Stable clients. Many of times have I switched clients to alieviate some connection issues, and always contact Shadow support if switching clients does not work.
So where can I download said clients?
The Stable and Beta clients can be downloaded from the Applications tab in your Shadow account on the Shadow.tech website.
If you would like to download the Alpha client, check out the Shadow Discord for the link.
I personally use the Alpha client. I want to test out new features so that I can write about them in this blog! Although I have jumped between them a lot. I'd suggest you try all of them, and see what one works best for you.
