How to connect Cloud Storage to your Shadow

As many of you may know, one of the most complained about features, and the most requested feature upgrade is the storage of your Shadow.

Shadow comes with 256GB of storage, which is more than enough for some, however, with the sizes of games getting larger and larger each year, 256GB is rather low.

Shadow has announced storage upgrades along with the other hardware upgrades in the EU, however, nothing has been announced for US users.

This post will be a guide on how to set up cloud storage and link it to your Shadow Computer so you can add storage on demand when needed. Do note, however, that cloud storage should not be used for gaming. You can use it as an archive to hold files such as images, videos, and anything else that will not be accessed consistently.

Though this is not an ideal fix for the storage issue, it does give a little leeway, especially for those who do video/photo editing on their Shadow and need the extra storage space. It also gives allows for a bit of high availability just incase your Shadow would need to be reset.

So, let us begin!

What is Cloud Storage?

Let us begin by explaining what exactly cloud storage is. It is storage that is held and replicated in a data center run by another company. Most cloud storage providers offer high availability storage, so if a server were to fail in their data center, your files will be perfectly fine and still accessible without any issue.

Cloud storage is the perfect way to keep important files safe and accessible from multiple locations, without the risk of losing them if your hard drive were to fail.

Cloud storage is offered by a multitude of companies. Amazon, Microsoft, Google, Backblaze, and many more. In this post, I will be mainly focusing on Microsoft's product OneDrive, and Backblaze's product B2.

OneDrive

What is it?

Microsoft OneDrive is one of Microsoft's cloud storage solutions. It is offered alongside an Office 365 subscription to get 1TB of storage or can be purchased separately for $2 a month, but you will only get 100GB of storage. Microsoft OneDrive has a desktop sync client that integrates with Windows 10, and allows for you to sync files to the cloud, and delete the local copy saving storage on your local machine.

Microsoft OneDrive's Files On-Demand feature will allow you to see a "cloud shortcut" version of each file in your OneDrive. When you need to access the file, it will automatically download to your computer to use.

How to use OneDrive

The awesome thing about OneDrive is how nicely it works with any Windows 10 computer. Once you purchase OneDrive and have it available to download. All you need to do is download the Sync client from Microsofts website. Open it up, log in with the account you purchased it with, and you will see a OneDrive folder appear in your File Explorer. You are now able to use OneDrive!

To get the most out of OneDrive, you want to make sure Files on Demand has been enabled. This can be found by opening your OneDrive settings...

And then select the settings tab and making sure Files On-Demand has been checked.

Backblaze B2

What is it?

Backblaze B2 is a cloud storage solution much like Amazon S3, Azure Blob Storage, Digital Ocean Spaces, etc. It is a storage solution that you only pay for how much you are using, downloading, and uploading.

Backblaze B2 offers 10GB of storage for free and can be set up fairly quickly.

However, Backblaze and the other similar cloud storage providers do not have a desktop client, instead, you must use a 3rd party program to connect said storage to your computer. I will be talking about odrive.

How to use Backblaze B2

First, you will need to go register for an account with the link above. You do not need a credit card to register, so it should be a simple and stressless signup :).

Once registered, log into your account. You should see "Buckets" on the right side. Select that, and select "Create a Bucket".

A window will pop up asking for a unique bucket name and whether you want it Private or Public.

Once the bucket is created, you should now see it from your main dashboard. You can select it, upload files, download files, adjust settings, etc. You can stop here if this type of user interface will work for you, otherwise, continue to the next section to see how you can set up odrive to use with Backblaze.

What is odrive exactly?

Odrive is a third party software that connects to your cloud storage providers and offers a sync client to your desktop computer, much like how the OneDrive sync client works.

ODrive is free for most of its features, however, they do have a premium subscription if you want to unlock all of its premium features.

Set up Instructions

You will first need to register for odrive with the link above.

From there, you will need to log into your account. Once logged in, you can select "Link Storage" to get started.

On the window that pops up, select the service you would like to connect too. In our case, we will be using Backblaze.

It will ask for you to enter your app key ID. We will need to navigate back to our Backblaze account to view this.

Once logged back into your Backblaze account, select "App Keys" on the right side. If you would like to view all of your buckets over odrive, you can select "Generate New Master Application Key" and use that for the input on odrive.

If you would like to restrict what odrive can see, you can create a separate key for each bucket you have.

Once added, you can navigate through your Backblaze storage folders via odrive. Feel free to download the desktop sync client to get a folder in your file explorer to sync files straight to your desktop!

Final Thoughts

Their you go! You have officially connected cloud storage to your Shadow device. Feel free to take a look at other solutions to use, but I recommend OneDrive and Backblaze B2! As I edit quite a few photos for this blog, having cloud storage is rather nice, especially when I need to work on my blog from a laptop when I do not have access to my Shadow PC.

Find the solution that works best for you, however, do note that cloud storage is not free, and thus you will be paying more if you go over any free amount the cloud storage provider offers you.
